Integrated land use and environmental models: a survey of current applications

چکیده

We are all witnesses to the second wave of socioeconomic modeling. The frustration aroused by thècomprehensive' black-box models of the 1980s is over; cellular automata and multiagent systems have come to the fore. After the retreat of the 1980s and early 1990s, the geographic community is again in favor of modeling, with the number of conferences and journal publications growing constantly. The emerging approaches and tools of environmental modeling are the focus of this book, a compendium of papers presented at a symposium convened at Arizona State University in 2000 to survey the progress made in integrated land-use and environmental modeling. The book's four sections consider specific aspects of this trend. The first section, ``Evolving definitions öchanging practices'', begins with``Advances in urban and environmental modeling: surveying the terrain and demarcating frontiers'', contributed by the book's editor, Subhrajit Guhathakurta. The paper offers a general evaluation whilst also claiming that land-use and environmental models are still overly biased towards economic phenomena, a trend constraining incorporation of ecological components that are often weakly if ever related to economics. Aggregation, another sinful tradition of economic modeling, continues to endure despite the demise of the black-box era. Guhathakurta claims that the future lies in high-resolution representation and calls for the development of agent-based`computer interfaces' to integrate better our knowledge of urban and environmental processes. I certainly agree with his argument that agent-based or, more generally, object-based modeling presents an improved way of articulating the nature of environmental systems and the principles of general systems theory in its modern guise. However, I would prefer to wait for additional successful examples of this school of modeling before I am totally convinced of its supremacy. The author is aware that new tools do not necessarily obliterate old problems. He therefore discusses the uncertainty still attached to environmental knowledge and social rules in addition to the inability to construct models with the rigidity of natural science or that overcome problems of temporal and spatial scaling. Guhathakurta also calls for proper definition of a model hierarchy and criteria for judging model performance. His response to these dilemmas is captured in his proposal to view models as tools for constructing a narrative öa meaningful story about the processöan idea that I like very much. The still popular format for communicating a modelöits description accompanied by illustrative simulation runsöis clearly inadequate for this purpose; to construct a narrative you need a thorough …

Design and Implementation of Integrated System for Urban Land Use Change Modeling

According to urban environment complexity and dynamism and need to targeted land use change, incorporation GIS and PSS in the form of Spatial Planning Support Systems is inevitable. The aim of this study is to develop a spatial planning support system for urban land uses change (ULCMS), such that planners can enter expert knowledge in the form of desired criteria and weights and see their influ...

Land use and land cover spatiotemporal dynamic pattern and predicting changes using integrated CA-Markov model

Analyzing the process of land use and cover changes during long periods of time and predicting the future changes is highly important and useful for the land use managers. In this study, the land use maps in the Ardabil plain in north-west part of Iran for four periods (1989, 1998, 2009 and 2013) are extracted and analyzed through remote sensing technique, using the land-sat satellite images. T...

Applying the Land Use-Transportation Integrated Model, Using the Most Effective Sustainable Urban Variables Case study: part of the district 22 of city of Tehran

Land use planning is the main core of urban planning and one of the main components of an urban system. This element has close relation with transportation system of the city, so if their interaction becomes insufficient, deterioration and chaos would have an adverse impact on the urban system and would cause serious environmental issues. The integrated land use-transportation models seem to b...

The SLEUTH Land Use Change Model: A Review

Land use change is driven by interaction in space and time between humans and the environment that can be captured by computer simulation models (Veldkamp and Verburg, 2004). In the last few decades, land use change models have played an important role in understanding the causes, mechanisms and consequences of land use dynamics. SLEUTH is an open source cellular automata based land use change ...

Integrated Environmental Analysis using GIS for Rational Planning of Conservatory Management of Slopes Application in the Ouergha Basin (Morocco)

The objective of this work is the realization of a map spatialising proposals of management and planning of lands, with a view to their rational management within the framework of a sustainable development. It was based on a diagnosis of the natural environment that allowed the analysis and identification of constraints to the development of the watershed of Ouergha (North of MOROCCO). The meth...

The Landscape as a Unit for Rangeland Inventory in Arid and Semi-arid Regions of Iran

Severe range degradation was critically extended in many region of Iran and caused many rangelands were restricted and interwoven with croplands in a complex system. Therefore, rangeland planning and inventory as an isolated activity has become almost impossible. Current landscape planning involves contributions of different social organizations often with different interests and with different...
